The Boys: The Boys in the story, Nicola, and Jacopo, Are the two ‘gentlemen’ of Verona. Nicola, aged 13, is the elder brother of Jacopo aged 12. Both of them are extremely sincere, devoted and self-sacrificing. They are ready to do anything to save their sister Lucia Who is afflicted with tuberculosis. They live a hard life and do all sorts of jobs. They shine shoes, sell fruit, hawk newspapers, conduct tourists and run errands. Yet they seem to be contented. They are also highly self-respecting. They do not want to publicize their family problem. They keep their family secret well. They are real heroes. During the war, they come to hate the Germans. They join the resistance movement for their country’s freedom.
The Narrator: the narrator in the story is a quite sensitive, sympathetic and helpful person. Despite his driver’s warning, he buys strawberries from the boys to help them. He takes pity on the shabbily dressed and nearly starved boys. He helps the boys in his car to the hospital where their sister is under treatment. He is quite wise in allowing the boys to keep their secret.
